NEWS: National Seminar on Metal Toxicity held in Al Ameen Medical College, Bijapur

                    The Department of Physiology, Al Ameen Medical College, Bijapur has organized a National Seminar on Recent Update of Metal Toxicity and its Implications on Community Health” on 11th & 12th December 2009. This seminar is sponsored by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), New Delhi and Al Ameen Charitable Fund Trust (ACFT)-Bangalore. This is the first ever a National Level Seminar organized by any Medical College in India.  The seminar covers the various health issues pertaining to heavy metal toxicities. Noted scientist Dr.S.J.S.Flora, Joint Director and Head, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Defense Research and Development Establishment, Gwalior has delivered his “Key Note” address. He discussed on ‘Metal Poisoning: Threat and Management’. Prof.Mohammad Fahim, UGC Emeritus Professor of Physiology, Jamia Milia Islamia Central University- Delhi delivered lecture on Mercury toxicities and its impact on cardiovascular system. Dr.Amal Roy Chowdhury of University of Calcutta delivered his lecture on effect of heavy metals on reproductive system. Dr.Anjana Vij, Scientist E of Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DRDO) delivered her talk on Lead toxicities and its possible preventive mechanism by Zinc and Vitamin C. Prof. Kusal K Das, Professor of Physiology, Al Ameen Medical College,Bijapur has discussed on nickel and hexavalent chromium toxicities and its possible counteraction with garlic treatment. Dr.Sreenivas Rao, Scientist from National Institute of Nutrition (NIN,ICMR), Hyderabad delivered his lecture on cadmium toxicities and its effect on general health. Dr.Ms. Vidhu Pachauri, Scientist, DRDE, Gwalior has spoken on the role of various nutraceuticals in lead toxicities. The function has been inaugurated by Dr.R.S.Dhaliwal, Deputy Director General-ICMR, New Delhi who was the Chief Guest of this National Seminar. Dr.Salim A Dhundasi, Professor & Head, Department of Physiology and Organizing Secretary of this seminar stressed the importance of this seminar on heavy metal toxicities which is considered as one of the burning issue on environmental health at the moment. Dr.B.S.Patil Dean, Al Ameen Medical College,Bijapur welcome the gathering in the inaugural function. Mr.Riyaz Faroqui,Trustee,Al Ameen Charitable Fund Trust, Bangalore also spoke in this seminar. The entire function was presided by Dr.Mohammad Ali Khan, Chief Executive Officer, ACFT, Bangalore. Dr.Khan also released special issue [Volume 02, No.02, 2009] of Al Ameen Journal of Medical Sciences in this occasion which is recently accepted for indexing in PubMed Central. At the end Prof.Kusal K Das, Convener of this Seminar has given vote of  thanks. This seminar was attended by 150 registered delegates from different parts of India

NEWS:  Gold Medal Research Award for Al Ameen Medical College faculty


Dr.Mrs.Swati N. Tikare

Dr.Mrs.Swati N. Tikare,MD ( Physiology), Assistant professor, Department of Physiology, Al Ameen Medical College,Bijapur-586108 has been awarded “Prof.B.B.Sarkar Meomorial Research Award,2008” by The Physiological Society of India. She has received this Gold Medal Award for her research publication entitled “Effect of supplementation of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and a-Tocopherol (Vitamin E) on acute and subchronic nickel exposed hyperglycemic rats” published in .J.Basic Clin Physiol Pharmacol 2008;. 19(2):89-101(London). Dr.Mrs Swati has been asked by The Physiological Society of India to present her paper and receive the award during Platinum Jubilee celebration of the Society to be held from 12th to 14th November 2009 in Kolkata. This research work has been sponsored by Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences, DRDO ,Delhi and the work has been carried out under the supervision of Prof.Kusal K.Das, Professor of Physiology.
